Mint julep
The grand-dame cocktail of the US’s deep south and the signature drink of the Kentucky derby, the mint julep is regarded as the forefather of the more fashionable mojito. The bonus here is this elegant summer sipper is easier to make than its Cuban cousin (no muddling required) and contains bourbon, mint and sugar. Mixologists recommend using high-proof bourbon and chill a tall glass beforehand. Historians say the mint julep was consumed by farmers in the south in the 1800s who drank the cocktail to kickstart their morning – we suggest you at least wait until midday, or 11am, before your first one.

Fruit juice should not be part of your five a day, says government adviser
An adviser to the government on obesity has called for fruit juice to be removed from the recommended list of five-a-day portions of fruit or vegetables, saying it contains as much sugar as many soft drinks.
Susan Jebb, head of diet and obesity research at the Medical Research Council's Human Nutrition Research unit in Cambridge, told the Sunday Times she had herself stopped drinking orange juice and advised others to do so, or at least drink it diluted. The paper quoted her as saying she would support a wider tax on sugar-heavy drinks.
